The Tale of Fulia

Updated: Sep 21, 2021

Phulia also spelled Fulia is in Nadia district. Fulia is called the “handloom weaving centre’ of West Bengal.

Shantipur-Phulia belt is known for its extraordinary weaves in Cotton and Silk. It is famous for its Phulia Tangail saris, which is similar to the Dhakai Jamdani saris, and also known for its jacquards and jamdanis.

Shantipur and Fulia are names to reckon with in the Indian Handloom industry. Shantipur weaving clusters are more than 500 years old but Fulia clusters mushroomed after independence and partition. It is believed that after Independence and the Partition in 1947, many experienced weavers of the Tangail Subdivision of Mymensingh District in East Pakistan (now the Tangail district under the Dhaka Division in Bangladesh), came to India and settled down in Fulia. Today, Fulia and Shantipur put together has around 1,25,000 weavers. However, Fulia is more popular amongst the sellers and buyers. The saris manufactured here are in huge demand across the country and international markets. They are exported to asian countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other countries

Fulia handloom clusters are known for their unique designs and techniques. Almost every house in Fulia owns handlooms. When you take a visit to the clusters, the weavers and their families are happy to explain the process of Handloom weaving and show the designs they are working on. It takes approximately 3-4 days to weave a sari. They also readily sell their products to the visitors at very reasonable price. Fulia is the only centre of traditional Tangail Sari in India.
